ELAT

It’s hard to know how to prepare for the Oxbridge admissions test – unseen material rules out the need for revision but doing nothing seems inappropriate when the stakes are so high. I offer practical ways of approaching the exam as well as opportunities to develop and practice the comparative skills it puts to the test.

I designed and led the ELAT training programme at SPGS for over 10 years so I teach and speak from experience.

Enrichment

For all the idiosyncrasies of the College admissions process, English tutors are largely in agreement in identifying reading as the most crucial discriminator. This is liberating and terrifying at the same time; knowing where to begin or how to fashion a reading list that feels authentic as well as ambitious can be overwhelming. I will help you get started, discuss your reading in ways that stretch and challenge (in both senses of the word) and help you make the most of your UCAS statement. I do not spoon-feed; my academic mentoring is about facilitating and empowering you to forge your own independent interests.

Summer Enrichment (group course)

Taught over 3 weeks in the summer term, this pre-university course introduces you to a text that rarely appears on A level syllabi – ‘literary curve-ball’ if you like, – designed to take you into uncrowded intellectual territories, get a taste of university- level discussion, forge independent lines of enquiry and generally set out your stall as an interesting student of literature with the tenacity and vim to go your own way. Check calendar for dates.

“Thank you so much for all you have done for me this year and in particular, your help with my American college application. I am proud to announce that I am now an admitted Yale student, thanks in no small part to your help.”
